Hi! I’m Dan.
Writing a bio about myself always feels weird and I don’t like it. However, if you don’t know who I am how could you consider coming to train with me? And I really hope that you feel invited to stop by and check it out. So, here goes…
Since I was 12 years old and got my first black belt I have been saying to myself, “One day, I’ll have my own dojo and teach martial arts.” It’s been another 25 (and counting) years since then, but in September of 2023 that dream has become reality.
Over the last 30+ years, I have trained extensively in a wide variety of martial arts systems and studied/practiced/had exposure to many more. I did the sport karate thing, competing in dozens of tournaments, including taking home the bronze from the 1999 AAU Jr. Olympic Games in fighting . I’ve done the full-contact thing (MMA, Kickboxing and Kyokushin). I’ve taught as part of my own training since I was 10 and have been teaching professionally since 2016.
I have been steeped in martial philosophy, meditation (I’m a Hollow Bones Zen priest and founder of YourTurn Meditative Living), fitness, mental wellbeing, and personal development for my entire life. This is my passion and sharing this with others totally lights me up.
To share it all effectively I’ve set up two different styles of training, one new school and one old school. The new school training is called Nami Bujutsu, the old school training is called Umi no Budo. I am also passionate about training specifically oriented toward women seeking a sense of additional security and offer a Women’s Self-Defense Program. Go read more about them – but nothing beats writing me an email and having a bit of a conversation.
